The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formally approved the University of Liverpool's (1881) plan to open its first campus in India. The university said in a statement today that a new campus in Bengaluru will open sometime in July of next year. This development backs the Indian government's plan to invite top international universities to open campuses in India in an effort to make the country's educational system more globally competitive.

It is anticipated that the University of Liverpool's Indian campus would open for classes in 2026–2027. In order to give Indian students access to top-notch education at home, the campus will offer programs in law, business, and health sciences. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes international universities to open campuses in India in order to promote internationalization and raise the standard of higher education, includes this effort as part of its larger goal.

The Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), Victoria University (Australia), Western Sydney University (Australia), and Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy) are more universities that have received approval from the UGC.
Bengaluru and the larger State of Karnataka are already connected to the University of Liverpool through a research collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences.

"We are thrilled to have been granted permission by the University Grants Commission to open Bengaluru's first international campus," stated Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. We are thrilled to be creating plans to contribute to the Indian government's ambitious goal of dramatically increasing higher education enrollment.

Building on the wonderful relationships and collaborations we already have in Bengaluru and the State of Karnataka, opening a campus there seems like the next logical step. We are excited to give gifted kids access to an outstanding educational experience as well as a variety of wonderful chances to advance their employability and skill set. To the advantage of business, the area, and the global community, we are also dedicated to establishing a robust research culture.
