CBSE new chairman 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has got a new chairperson. A senior IAS officer Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari from the 2001 batch of IAS officers, belonging to AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as the new Chairperson of CBSE.
Earlier, Dr. Bhandari was holding the post of Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir before getting the prestigious appointment of heading the country's largest board of school education. His appointment marks the presence of an experienced bureaucrat at the helm of affairs of CBSE, which is known for organizing important examinations in the schools besides creating academic structures for affiliated schools in India and abroad.
Who Is Mandeep K. Bhandari?
Mandeep K. Bhandari is a 2001 batch senior IAS Officer belonging to AGMUT cadre that consists of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories. Bhandari has worked in a number of important administrative roles in his career, especially in the state of Jammu & Kashmir as well as Union Government level.
Prior to his appointment as CBSE chairman, Bhandari has been serving as Principal Secretary to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor. Bhandari’s administrative experience comprises work in fields like Health, Medical Education, District Administration, etc.
It should be noted that according to available information, Mandeep K. Bhandari is not just a career civil servant, but also has an experience in field of Medicine, having obtained an MBBS degree.
Mandeep Bhandari Replaces Lokhande Prashant Sitaram
This is the first such appointment after some changes in the leadership of the Central Board of Secondary Education.
Senior IAS officer, Prashant Sitaram Lokhande has been in charge of CBSE in an ad hoc capacity since he was appointed to lead the CBSE in June 2026 and later was also promoted as the Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry of Union of India along with the ad hoc charge of CBSE.
The government order further informed that CBSE Chairperson has been temporarily upgraded to the level of Additional Secretary in the Government of India.
