Government May Give 50% Weightage to Class 12 Board Marks in NEET & JEE Admissions

As per media reports, the Union Government is considering an education reform that could be the biggest of its kind in years, involving allocation of up to 50% weight to the scores obtained in Class 12 board examination for admission to professional courses like engineering and medicine. This move could revolutionise admissions for the lakhs of students preparing for national entrance exams like NEET and JEE Main. The move that is reportedly under discussion aims to promote steady performance in academics throughout one's school life and to de-emphasise the dependence on a single exam. However, no official decision on this reform has been made yet but the move has sparked discussions among the student and parent community, along with teachers and coaching centres.

Government Looking to Reform India's Entrance Examination System

Ministry of Education is said to have constituted a high level panel that may recommend certain modifications to the present examination system of India that conducts entrance competitive exams. The report of the panel may include the modification that would assign a 50% weightage to the Class 12 Board results, while 50% still attributed to entrance exams. The recommendations from the panel comes as many questions were raised over the validity of the national entrance exams. The central government is evaluating the proposal for the adoption of a fairer and more transparent admissions process that addresses issues of paper leaks, malpractice exams, coaching class pressure and exam stress. Besides bringing attention back to classroom education instead of students prepping solely for competitive exams, officials feel that giving weightage to the classroom academic achievements alongside the entrance test scores would result in fair and holistic assessments.

What Does the 50% Board Weightage Proposal Mean?

Admission into the various professional courses could no longer solely be dependent on NEET/JEE marks in case it comes into effect. 50% weightage could be assigned for the 12th class board exam results and 50% to the scores of NEET, JEE or other entrances tests. That would provide a good lead to consistent academic performers. It needs to be reiterated that this is yet just a recommendation and it's not a firm policy at present. Students preparing for NEET 2027, JEE Main 2027 or other upcoming entrance examinations need to continue following the standard procedure of admission until a formal announcement is made by the Ministry of Education.

Why is the Government Considering This Reform?

Many experts on education say the present admission scheme puts the spotlight on one paper that goes on for a few hours. What led the government to probe the scheme The rising exam-related stress on the student; the growth in the culture of coaching institutes; incidents of paper leaks; the cost incurred by families to prepare for admission in high-cost coaching centres; schools and students lacking interest in academic education; a comprehensive admission process for student. The government plans to make students shift focus towards board examination as the government wants the students to pay attention equally to schoolwork and entrance examination.

Challenges Before Implementing the Proposal

However, despite being applauded by many educators, few specialists have raised the major roadblocks in the idea. The first is varying marking patterns by the various education boards. For students of CBSE, ICSE, or any State board, marks are accorded based on varying criteria. In case board results do have a deciding role to play in selection processes, the government may have to introduce a stringent normalization system to ensure fairness for students of the different boards. Soft markings by certain boards would benefit students from such boards if the normalization system were flawed, experts warned.

Students and Parents React

Some of the pupils believe it is a laudable step to recognize continued academic success in the classroom. Those students that have done well throughout the year but had problems with the pressured entrance exams might be helped under the new system. The idea of lessening dependency on tuition centres is well-received by parents who are of the view that the child should be appreciated based on their success at the school instead of a singular entrance test. On the other hand, students from another group fear the move might increase pressure on the Class 12 board examinations and make them similarly competitive.

Coaching Industry Could See Major Impact

The concept if introduced, may badly hurt India's multi-billion rupees coaching sector. Currently, several students invest 2-3 years learning for admission tests such as JEE and NEET nearly exclusively. More Weight on Board Exams If board exams carry weight, then schools would resume their stature as a focal center in learning preparation and students would be interested in preparing equally for both, board exams and classroom learning. Education experts said the reform would improve school education and in the long run decrease the overdependence of the student on coaching centres.

Other Education Reforms Under Discussion

Besides making board exam results 50% of the marks for the upcoming board exams, the group has reportedly suggested various other measures, which are: - 50% weightage to marks secured in board exams - JEE and NEET syllabuses to be brought closer to NCERT syllabus - multiple entrance exams conducted per year - adaptive computer-based testing - greater transparency in examination process - more stringent measures to avoid paper leaks - improve entrance and evaluation process The measures aim to bring more transparency, reliability, and ease to India's system of entering higher education.

No Official Decision Yet

Despite months of negotiations, the proposal has not yet been officially approved by the Ministry of Education. The matter is under review and the government is expected to conduct its feasibility study before giving any final decision. Unless the official circular is issued, the admissions in engineering and medical colleges will continue on the same existing parameters as admissions will largely be based on their scores in the entrance examination. Hence, students will also need to continue with their studies in preparation for their board exams, in addition to NEET and JEE.
