Ph.D Admission: A new stream for the eligible students who have finished their four-year bachelor’s program has been added by the University of Delhi (DU), enabling them to go for a direct PhD degree without obtaining a postgraduate/master’s degree.

This step is being implemented as a one-off measure for students from the first batch of Four Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP) from DU to be graduated in 2026.

No Need to Complete MA or MSc First

In the conventional system, students usually earn their bachelor’s degree and master’s degree before joining the PhD program. But the novel measure allows the four-year UG program as adequate for the selected students who would be able to join the doctoral program under this unique system.

This move is important for the students graduating from the four-year UG program offered at DU, because they may not have to take any extra time to complete a postgraduate program.

As per some sources, the students wishing to join the program must fulfill the academic eligibility requirements for the program, which include a minimum CGPA of 7.5 in the four-year UG program.

Special Opportunity for 2026 FYUP Graduates

The direct PhD program will not be introduced as an alternative to the usual procedure for admission of PhD in the university. The special initiative has been launched by DU for the very first batch of FYUP program students who have completed their four years of study.

This decision has been taken by DU in view of completion of the first full cycle of four-year undergraduate program by DU. The four-year undergraduate program was introduced by DU along with other initiatives to align with NEP 2020 in higher education sector.

What Students Need to Know

The students must be informed that obtaining a four-year bachelor's degree is not sufficient for their admission into a PhD program.

The candidates shall still need to meet the criteria laid out for PhD program eligibility in addition to passing through the admission procedure of the university.

The DU current framework for PhD programs under the UGC regulations 2022 already allows for a four-year bachelor's degree to be used as the eligibility criterion for PhD admissions, provided that the candidate meets the requisite academic standard. As per the UGC framework, the cut-off mark for a four-year bachelor's degree holder is 75%.

A Major Change in Higher Education

The choice by DU can turn out to be a significant step in the Indian higher education system. In the four-year undergraduate program, there are increased chances for the students to do more study and research work as opposed to the previous three-year bachelor's degree program.

For bright students, who want to do research, this option will be faster and a good way of joining PhD programs. In place of taking two more years in the conventional master's program, those who qualify will go on to research straight from the four-year undergraduate program.

Nevertheless, one should always take time to understand what is needed in the particular PhD program and how to get in.

What This Means for DU Students

This news is especially significant for students who are currently pursuing four-year bachelor’s degrees from DU.

With this pathway,

•           Students who have completed their four-year UG can be considered for direct PhD admissions.

•           No separate MA/ MSc or any other master’s degree will be needed through this special pathway.

•           The students have to meet the academic eligibility criteria specified.

•           The 2026 provision is specially made for the first batch of DU graduates through the FYUP.

•           The admission will be subject to the PhD admission process of the university.

This news highlights the evolving academic system that is becoming more common due to NEP 2020, which includes linking four-year undergraduate degrees with research studies.

For DU students, this is a good opportunity to get into research studies after their undergraduate degrees.
