58 Engineering Colleges Shut Across India : As per All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), more than 55 engineering colleges across India were closed for several different reasons during 2025-2026 academic session, but currently admitted students can complete their degree programs.

58 engineering and technical colleges have been shut down progressively during 2025-2026. In case progressive closure has been given to any college, it means that no new students can be admitted for the first year of the academic session. However, the current students can continue their study program, says a senior official from AICTE.

Engineering, architecture, management, and pharmacy programs are being controlled by the AICTE, which is the statutory national level apex body of India for regulating technical education.

There were progressive closures of 58 engineering and technical institutions as per the AICTE notice for the academic session of 2025-26. However, the list of all 58 institutions was not made available by the AICTE or the original PTI report. It is only the state-wise closure data and reasons that have been published.

AICTE has categorized the type of closures into two categories: complete closure, where the courses have been completely closed and affected students have been shifted to other institutions, and progressive closure, where there is a gradual closure of the institutions, but allowing the existing students to complete their degrees.

Reasons for the closures are:

* Less number of students

* Lack of qualified faculty members

* Non-conformity to the AICTE guidelines and infrastructure

* Other reasons as well.

There will be no more admission of freshers, but the existing students will be able to complete their courses.
