GATE 2027 Registration Date Postponed Again

GATE 2027 registration: Applicants planning to take up the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 exam are now required to wait a while before being able to register for the test. IIT Madras, which is responsible for conducting GATE 2027, has once again deferred the date when the registration portal will be opened. As per the initial schedule, the portal for applying would open on August 27, 2026, but this is yet to happen.

According to the official website of GATE 2027, the date of commencement of GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) is yet to be announced and it says that the registration will start “soon”. Nothing new about the opening date of the application process has come to light so far.

This deferment marks the second time when there has been a change in the dates of the application process. IIT Madras had earlier announced the plan to open the application process for GATE 2027 on August 14, 2026, but on August 13, the plan was revised and the opening date was set as August 27.

GATE 2027 Registration New Date Yet to Be Announced

Since the application portal is not yet open, one must refrain from taking the earlier mentioned date of August 27 as valid. The expected announcement of a new opening date by IIT Madras can be made on the official GATE 2027 portal.

While this remains true, the official date is still September 27, 2026, for applications without a late fee and October 5, 2026, for applications with a late fee. Whether or not these dates will stay as they are even after the opening date is something which applicants must keep an eye out for.

GATE 2027 Registration Through DigiLocker

The first modification made in connection with GATE 2027 is the mandatory use of DigiLocker during registration for all Indians. According to IIT Madras, candidates should prepare or update their verified accounts on DigiLocker before filling out the application form.

The use of DigiLocker will help in improving the efficiency of the verification process of the documentation of the candidates and decrease the chances of any discrepancies regarding the candidate’s information.

Those candidates who have not yet made a verified account in DigiLocker should create one in advance to avoid difficulties when the application period for GATE 2027 begins.

New Robotics and Automation Paper Introduced

There is another major development in the GATE 2027 examination that comes with the introduction of the new RA (Robotics and Automation) test paper in the examination.

As per the GATE 2027 official portal, there are a total of 30 test papers in the GATE 2027 examination. Students need to be careful about the new syllabus and paper combinations while selecting the test paper or papers.

Further, IIT Madras has also updated the syllabus and two-paper combinations for GATE 2027. There have been changes in some of the sectional paper codes like XE, XH and XL, as well as the syllabus of Biotechnology and other examination subjects.

GATE 2027 Examination Dates

Although there was a delay in the registration process, the schedule for the GATE 2027 exam still remains the same.

The exam is set to take place in six days as follows:

•           February 6 and 7, 2027

•           February 13 and 14, 2027

•           February 20 and 21, 2027

The exam will take place in several sessions. According to the schedule, the GATE 2027 results will be released on March 19, 2027.

It is important for the candidates to remember that the delay in the registration process does not mean any delay in the exam.

Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?

GATE stands among the foremost national level exams for engineers and scientists in India. GATE score plays an important role in determining admissions in various postgraduate degree programs such as MTech, ME and other masters degree programs and some doctoral programs as well.

Apart from this, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also consider GATE scores in the process of hiring people. Nonetheless, it does not assure admission or scholarship or PSU employment automatically. Every institution sets its own requirements and criteria.

This exam is thus important for both students seeking higher education as well as graduates aspiring to be in the technical profession in public sector.

Candidates Advised to Keep Documents Ready

Now that the registration date is yet to be announced, students need to use this period to gather all the necessary information and documents. Candidates should especially ensure that their DigiLocker account, personal information, educational qualifications, photograph, and other documents are up to the mark.

They should also choose their choice of GATE paper along with checking their eligibility for the second paper under the allowed two-paper combinations.

As the application process dates have been delayed twice now, students are recommended to depend solely on the official GATE 2027 website for information.

What Should Candidates Do Now?

This deferment gives more time to the aspirants to get ready for the exam. Aspirants need to continue with their preparations for GATE based on the present syllabus and not hold back till the start of the registration process.

Also, candidates are advised to keep checking the official portal for further information related to the new registration process.

The above development is especially significant for those who have been planning to complete their application immediately following August 27. The registration link is still inactive. Therefore, the aspirants have to wait till IIT Madras declares the new date.
